Graduate students eligible for the W.D. Farr Scholarship in animal and meat science

Graduate Students Encouraged to Apply for W.D. Farr Scholarship

Posted on September 14, 2026September 18, 2026 by Farm News Daily

W.D. Farr Scholarship Opens Its Final Year of Applications

The W.D. Farr Scholarship is now accepting applications for the final year of a program that has shaped agricultural careers for two decades. The National Cattlemen’s Foundation announced on Sept. 1, 2026, that graduate students pursuing meat science, animal science and related fields can apply from Centennial, Colorado, through Oct. 9, 2026. For 20 years, this scholarship has helped students build the skills the beef industry depends on. Now, students have one last chance to join that legacy.

A Legacy Rooted in Vision

The scholarship carries the name of the late W.D. Farr, a third-generation Coloradan who spent his life pushing agriculture forward. Farr was a pioneer rancher, statesman and banker known for his extraordinary vision. Because of his dedication to livestock, water development and better farming methods, ranchers and farmers across the nation changed how they worked.

Farr also helped build the organizations that still serve producers today. He became the first president of the National Cattlemen’s Foundation, and he led the American National Cattlemen’s Association, which later became the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. Farr died at age 97 in August 2007, the same year the foundation established the scholarship in his honor.

What the W.D. Farr Scholarship Offers Graduate Students

This year, the program will award two grants worth $15,000 each. Recipients earn the awards by showing superior achievement in both academics and leadership. As a result, the money supports students who are already committed to advancing the beef industry.

The benefits, however, reach far beyond a single student. Previous recipients say the program strengthens their own research while lifting the entire industry. For example, 2025 recipient and Colorado State University doctoral candidate Sydney Bowman-Schnug described the impact in personal terms.

“This scholarship is making a monumental difference in my pursuit to further the future of the cattle industry and is helping me encourage the next generation of agricultural leaders in both youth and undergraduate teaching programs,” Bowman-Schnug said.

How to Apply for the W.D. Farr Scholarship

Eligible students must complete an online application to be considered. The process asks for several documents, so applicants should plan ahead. Additionally, the foundation wants materials that show both ability and passion for the field.

Applicants must submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae and a description of their goals and experience. Furthermore, the application requires a short essay, a statement of belief in the industry and a review of the applicant’s graduate research. Finally, students need three letters of recommendation, all due by Oct. 9, 2026.

The foundation will recognize the 2026 recipients at CattleCon 2027, held Feb. 2-4 in Nashville, Tennessee. Meanwhile, students should gather their references early, because strong recommendations often take time to secure.

Why the Final Year Matters for the Beef Industry

The end of the W.D. Farr Scholarship marks a meaningful moment for agriculture. For two decades, the program has invested directly in the people who study, teach and improve the beef industry. Therefore, this last round of applications gives graduate students a rare final opportunity.

The National Cattlemen’s Foundation continues to advance the industry by educating the next generation of professionals. Consequently, each scholarship recipient represents a lasting return on that mission. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, which has represented America’s cattle producers since 1898, remains tied to that same purpose through education and public policy.

As applications close on Oct. 9, graduate students across the country will compete for one of the program’s final two awards. The W.D. Farr Scholarship has spent 20 years building a stronger, smarter beef industry, and its closing chapter honors that record. Watch for the 2026 recipients to be celebrated at CattleCon 2027 in Nashville, where a two-decade legacy will reach its close.
