Cattle Industry Summer Business Meeting Wraps With Strong Optimism

Posted on July 21, 2026July 24, 2026 by Farm News Daily

The Cattle Industry Summer Business Meeting concluded this week in Aurora, Colorado, with a clear sense of optimism among the nearly 700 cattle producers who traveled from across the country to attend. From July 14 through July 16, 2026, these men and women worked together to shape the future of the beef business through grassroots policy development. Meanwhile, their discussions helped set the direction for research, education and promotion efforts in the year ahead.

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, or NCBA, hosted the gathering. For many attendees, the event offered more than just business. It also gave producers a chance to learn from one another and strengthen the community ties that define American agriculture.

Producers Set Priorities at the Cattle Industry Summer Business Meeting

During the Cattle Industry Summer Business Meeting, producers took part in NCBA policy sessions and Beef Checkoff committee discussions. They evaluated emerging issues, advanced initiatives launched earlier at CattleCon, and established priorities for the upcoming fiscal year. Additionally, regional meetings gave attendees a space to talk through local concerns affecting their own operations.

NCBA President Gene Copenhaver emphasized the value of coming together. “We conduct a lot of business during this meeting, but we also benefit by gathering together and learning from each other,” he said. Furthermore, he thanked producers for the time they spend away from their families to improve the industry.

“I appreciate the time producers take away from their families to make our industry better for future generations and the commitment our state partners have to helping advance the business of the industry,” Copenhaver added.

Grassroots Policy Drives the Beef Industry Forward

One theme stood out clearly during the week. Copenhaver praised the strength of NCBA’s grassroots process, where policy begins with the people closest to the land.

State cattlemen’s associations brought forward recommendations on a wide range of issues. For example, producers discussed the Conservation Reserve Program and Livestock Risk Protection. They also addressed Theileria orientalis Ikeda, a disease carried by Asian longhorned ticks that has drawn growing concern among ranchers.

“These discussions and resulting recommendations are where true grassroots policy development comes to fruition,” Copenhaver said. As a result, he noted, NCBA’s priorities remain driven by producers and reflect the real needs of the industry.

Because these issues touch everyday operations, the input from producers carries real weight. Consequently, the meeting served as a reminder that policy affecting cattle country works best when it starts at the ranch gate.

Board Approves Recommendations and Highlights Beef Promotion

The NCBA Board of Directors approved several policy recommendations during the meeting. These will now go to the membership for a mail ballot vote in September. Therefore, producers across the country will have a direct say in shaping the association’s official positions.

The board meeting also spotlighted the work of the Federation of State Beef Councils. This group leads collaborative national efforts to promote beef, support research and expand education. In addition, its work aims to strengthen consumer trust and drive beef demand, which benefits producers at every level.

Why the Cattle Industry Summer Business Meeting Matters

The Cattle Industry Summer Business Meeting matters because it puts producers at the center of decisions that affect their livelihoods. Growers and ranchers do not simply react to policy. Instead, they help write it.

While the meeting focused on business, it also reflected the shared commitment of families who work hard to feed the nation. For future generations, that dedication remains the foundation of the beef industry.

Looking ahead, cattle producers and industry stakeholders will gather again for CattleCon 2027. The event returns to downtown Nashville, Tennessee, from Feb. 2-4, 2027, with business meetings beginning Feb. 1. Readers should watch for those sessions, where the priorities set this summer will continue to take shape.

Founded in 1898, NCBA has represented America’s cattle producers for well over a century. Finally, its ongoing work through education and public policy continues to preserve the heritage and strength of an industry built on hard work and community.
